The Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (TIIT-CAS) is a national research institution jointly established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Tianjin Municipal Government, dedicated to research in biomanufacturing and industrial biotechnology. As a strategic scientific and technological force in China’s industrial biotechnology sector, TIIT-CAS is tasked with innovating core technologies for the biotechnology industry, developing major disruptive technologies in biomanufacturing, supporting the high-quality and sustainable development of China’s bioeconomy. The institute focuses on three strategic themes: “replacing fossil resources with renewable carbon resources, replacing traditional chemical processing methods with clean biological processing methods, and enhancing industrial standards through modern biotechnology.” It conducts fundamental and applied fundamental research in three key areas: “industrial protein science and biocatalysis engineering, synthetic biology and microbial manufacturing engineering, and biological systems and bioprocess engineering.”
